N.E.I.S.D. Health Services Mission Statement

To provide an environment that promotes optimal wellness for the students in the North East Independent School District,

In a way that

    Provides individualized quality health care

    Encourages parent/child communication and involvement

    Emphasizes health education

    Utilizes available resources

So that all students will be able to achieve their maximum learning potential.

Because learning is dependent on good health, we would like to share some tips on keeping your child healthy.

Fever

For an oral temperature of 100 degrees F or greater, the child needs to be kept at home until the fever is gone. If a rash occurs, check with your child’s doctor. Remember, never give aspirin to a child!

Teeth

Remind your child to brush their teeth twice a day. Take your child for a dental checkup every 6 to 12 months.

Nutrition

It is important that your child eat a well-balanced diet to promote growth. Limit fats and sweets and junk foods with “empty calories.” Encourage your child to drink water when thirsty.  A great website for health and nutrition can be viewed at www.catchtexas.org.

Sleep

Your child needs adequate sleep every night. The amount depends on the child’s age, activity level, and health status. The school-age child averages 9 1/2 hours of sleep at night and the preschooler needs up to 12 hours.

Hand washing

Good hand washing is a very easy but important practice to help prevent the spread of germs. Children and adults should always wash hands before handling food and after wiping noses and after using the toilet.

Be wise. Immunize!

Protect your child against many serious and life-threatening illnesses. Immunizations are required for school entry.

Illness

Children who are ill have difficulty concentrating in school, have a lowered resistance to additional illnesses, and can spread germs to other students. If your child is ill, evaluate carefully if he or she should attend school that day.
